Great news, comedians: Open Mic List now let’s you add and edit your own open mics! I’ve been looking forward to introducing this feature for a while… hopefully, this will make my lil’ app even more handy as you try to find stage time. Remember, you can always download this app for free from the App Store and Google Play. Here’s a walkthrough; we’ll role play this entire process. You be you, I’ll be me. Here we go. You want to add an open mic to my really useful app, Open Mic List — or perhaps edit an existing open mic…
I found out this week that Garfunkel and Oates just put out a new iPhone app, and I’m mildly fascinated with it. I pay attention when people in the comedy world turn indie mobile app developer, because after all, I’m a person in the comedy world who has turned indie mobile app developer. (If you’re a comedian and haven’t yet downloaded my free app for iPhone & Android OPEN MIC LIST, you should join the thousands of your fellow funny folks around America who have.) So I checked their app out. Here’s a video of me both a) checking out Garfunkel…
Welcome to the first post of my newest blog segment: Top Cinemagram GIF’s. If you have no idea what that means, let me first explain that I have a new mobile obsession, and by far, it’s Cinemagram. It’s an app on my iPhone 4s that let’s me shoot and edit three second movies into sometimes poignant, often-times ridiculous GIF’s. Before reading any further, you should head over to the App Store and play around with it so you know what I’m talking about. So. For your time-wasting enjoyment, this is a roundup of the week’s best ones. You might have seen these…
As mentioned last time, I built OPEN MIC LIST, a really useful mobile app that tells comedians where the closest open mic is every day of the week. Unlike then, now you can download it for free on both Android AND iOS devices. Meaning, you can now perform more often. Basically, I personally needed this app. I needed help finding open mics easily, because in Los Angeles, gas is expensive, and everything is far from everything else. When I didn’t find exactly what I wanted in the App Store or Android Market — a free app that simply…
If you’re reading this, hopefully you’re a stand-up comedian who wants to get funnier at least in part by performing more frequently. That’s the intended audience of this post: comedians who want to be better at comedy. Whether you agree with me or not, it’s my personal belief that you should only refer to yourself as a comedian when you’re on stage. Otherwise, you’re just talking about being a comedian. You can talk about the shows you’ve played, or wanted to play, or couldn’t play, but none of that makes you a comedian. I’m a comedian when I’m making people…

The Standard Hotel on Sunset Blvd is becoming a frequent haunt of mine. Mostly because of my monthly comedy show. Here’s the Facebook event. The show is free, which let’s you know it’s one of the good things in life. Several of my associates will be hilarious as well, very probably. Mike Phirman ( http://www.mikephirman.com ) Dave Nystrom ( http://comedians.jokes.com/dave-nystrom ) Eric Toms ( http://www.erictomscomedy.com ) Dennis Gubbins ( https://twitter.com/#!/dgubs ) Free show. Easy parking. Great drinks. The Standard Hotel FREE 9pm 8300 Sunset Blvd West Hollywood, CA – Social media marketing provided by Shmedia.

Podberg – Episode 4: Max’s Hardest Gig of 2011 by maxgoldberg The clip above is from my comedy podcast, Podberg. It’s been a while since I’ve posted to this trustworthy blog you’re currently reading (here since 2004!), so I figured I’d give you guy’s something chewy. The Soundcloud clip above is a mere eight minutes that comprises all of Episode 4. This clip you’ll hear is a recording from The Spot Cafe in Culver City, a favorite comedy haunt of mine (and one of the rare ones not too far from my apartment). To be clear here, by, ‘favorite’, I…
Podberg – Episode 2: Ben Schoen by maxgoldberg In episode two of Podberg, Max Goldberg interviews web advertising guru Ben Schoen about the struggle between business and art, as well as being raised in meth-addicted Kansas and outing him publicly as a marijuana connoisseur. Ben on web ads: “I do feel guilty about driving the beast of consumerism, it’s really one of those don’t hate the player, hate the game things.” Ben on Kansas: “All the kids in my class were cousins, and then I found out their parents were cousins.” Ben’s company, Essential Hype, is here: http://www.essentialhype.com
Podberg – Episode 1: Nabeel Afsar In the premiere episode of Podberg, Max Goldberg interviews Nabeel Afsar of indie rock band White Lights about the struggle between business and art, as well as about squatting in a foreclosed home known as ‘HouseHouse’. Check out Nabeel claiming that music is an experience, not a product. Nabeel on money: “How do we pay our bills? We try not to.” Nabeel on the internet: “That’s the pressing concern of our age — what is happening?” Nabeel on religion: “I knew what was wrong when I heard it.” More info about Nabeel and White…
